About
Barnyard for Game Boy Advance is a single-player adventure game based on the 2006 Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies animated film. Developed specifically for Nintendo's handheld by Halfbrick Studios and published by THQ, this version arrived in North America in August 2006, with European distribution following that October. Rather than simply retelling the film scene by scene, it brings players to its secretive farm community, where the animals stand upright, talk, ride bicycles and keep their lively social life hidden whenever people are nearby.
The story begins with the player as a newly arrived cow looking to earn a place among the farm's residents. The player can choose a male or female character, then explore a colorful overhead map while meeting familiar film characters and taking on their requests. A quest marker above an animal signals available work, and assignments frequently involve finding an item, delivering supplies, helping prepare the barn or completing a small challenge. The lighthearted premise keeps the emphasis on becoming part of the community and proving that the new arrival belongs in the barnyard's after-hours fun.
Exploration provides the framework for Barnyard's progression. The farm is divided into areas reached as tasks are completed, with paths, fences, trees, buildings and hazards shaping the route. Walking is always available, while running draws from a stamina meter that refills after the player slows down. Later access to a bicycle makes longer trips faster, though tight obstacles can make navigating the farm as important as speed. This structure gives the compact Game Boy Advance version a roaming, task-driven rhythm rather than a straight sequence of platforming levels.
Not every problem is solved through errands. Raccoons and coyotes can threaten the player, and the cow's unusual defensive tool is a spray of milk. Health and stamina make these encounters more than simple dialogue scenes, while the game's top-down perspective asks the player to position shots and avoid danger in the surrounding terrain. The farm also operates on a day-and-night routine: the on-screen clock tracks the passing time, and resting after the evening arrives provides an opportunity to save progress. These details tie exploration, errands and the farm's changing activity into one continuous adventure.
Mini-games break up the main quest and reflect the film's playful picture of animal life after dark. Activities include barnyard bowling, a whack-a-mole-style challenge, bicycle racing and versions of the animals' mailman-taunting mischief. Completing jobs opens more diversions, so optional score-based events sit alongside the route through the story. Players can also gather resources, spend earned currency on items for the barn and take part in familiar farm pastimes such as golf. The result is a collection of short activities built around the same central idea: the barn is much more animated than it appears from the outside.
Barnyard was one of several 2006 releases created to accompany the movie across home and portable systems, but the Game Boy Advance cartridge is its own production rather than a direct technical conversion of the PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC or Wii game. Halfbrick adapted the license into a bright, sprite-based, single-player farm adventure suited to the GBA's portable format. Its combination of character errands, open-area navigation, simple combat and repeatable diversions makes it a distinct handheld take on Otis, Ben, Peck and the rest of the film's animal cast.
