About

Snatcher is Konami's 1994 English-language Sega CD edition of Hideo Kojima's cyberpunk graphic adventure. Originally conceived for Japanese computers in 1988, the game reached Western players through this Sega CD release, published by Konami for North America and Europe. Its CD format supports a lengthy English voice track and dramatic music, turning a dense, text-led investigation into a distinctly cinematic experience.

The story opens in 2047, after the devastating Lucifer-Alpha catastrophe, in the artificial-island metropolis of Neo Kobe City. Humanoid bio-robots called Snatchers murder people and assume their identities behind convincing artificial skin. Amnesiac former agent Gillian Seed joins the JUNKER anti-Snatcher task force, hoping that the cases he is assigned will lead him back to the missing history shared with his estranged wife, Jamie.

Most of the game unfolds through an unusually expansive command menu rather than direct character movement. Players examine rooms and evidence, talk through subjects with witnesses, make calls, consult records, use possessions, and travel among locations as each new clue opens the next line of inquiry. This structure makes the player an active investigator: revisiting people, showing the right item, and probing a fresh topic can be as important as finding a location.

Gillian is joined from the outset by Metal Gear Mk. II, a compact robot navigator and indispensable investigative companion. Metal provides advice, stores information, and helps turn the procedural side of the case into a conversation between partners. The game also breaks up its dialogue and searches with sudden first-person shooting encounters, where targets appear across a nine-panel display and rapid aim is required; Sega CD players can use the Konami Justifier light gun in these sequences.

The Sega CD version builds on the CD-ROM adaptation's completed three-act story and includes changes made for its Western localization. Konami added some interactive choices and mystery-solving performance grading, as well as voice-acted material such as an extended prologue and an ending scene. It remains the only official English release of Snatcher, making this version central to the game's following outside Japan.

Its localization also alters several scenes and details. Sexual material was removed or toned down, Katrina Gibson's age was changed from 14 to 18, nudity was obscured, and one graphic animal-death moment was softened; some bar cameos were replaced with Konami characters over copyright concerns. These revisions coexist with an otherwise mature mystery of identity, paranoia, artificial life, and a city where nobody can be assumed to be human.

Snatcher blends hard-boiled detective fiction, anime-styled artwork, and science-fiction influences into a long-form adventure that rewards patience and close attention. The Sega CD presentation gives Gillian's investigation a strong sense of place through voiced exchanges, atmospheric music, expressive portraits, and carefully staged discoveries. For players willing to follow its deliberate pace, it is both a landmark in Kojima's pre-Metal Gear Solid work and an engrossing investigation into what remains of a person when appearances can be manufactured.
