About

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for Sega Master System is a 1994 falling-block puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Sega. Released for Sega's 8-bit console after the 1993 Genesis and Game Gear editions, it recasts Compile's Puyo Puyo formula in a Sonic-themed world drawn from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series. Rather than guiding Sonic through an action stage, the player enters a series of head-to-head puzzle battles to foil Dr. Robotnik's scheme.

The story takes place in Beanville, where Robotnik's Henchbots have rounded up the bean-like inhabitants for his Mean Bean-Steaming Machine. The player takes the role of Has Bean and works through Robotnik's dungeon challengers in an effort to stop the operation. The presentation gives each computer-controlled opponent an animated personality, and the scenario's steady sequence of rivals supplies a simple framework for what is fundamentally a competitive puzzle game.

Each playfield receives a connected pair of coloured beans from the top of the screen. Using the Master System control pad, players shift the pair left or right and rotate it before it lands. Linking four or more beans of one colour clears them, and any beans left above the cleared group fall into place. A well-timed fall can create another match, allowing chains that turn a basic clear into a more damaging attack.

Those chains are central to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Successful combinations send nuisance beans to the opposing board, crowding the rival's space and making their next moves harder to manage. The unwanted beans cannot be cleared in an ordinary colour group; they must be removed by making a matching group alongside them. A round ends when a board fills to the top, so players must balance quick clears with planning for larger chains and defend against incoming obstructions.

The Master System version retains the single-player Scenario Mode and a two-player versus option for local contests. It also includes an Exercise Mode for practising without the pressure of an opponent and a Puzzle Mode built around predetermined bean arrangements. These modes make the 8-bit release more than a succession of rival battles: it can be played as a score-and-survival puzzle, a competitive game for two players, or a set of compact clearing challenges.

Although its cast and Beanville premise are Sonic-related, the Master System game is an adaptation of Puyo Puyo rather than a conventional Sonic platformer. Its western localization replaced the original game's characters with Robotnik, Has Bean, and the cartoon-inspired Henchbots, while the core coloured-bean matching system remained intact. As a late Master System puzzle release from Compile and Sega, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine combines accessible movement and rules with the increasingly tactical chain play that defines the Puyo Puyo style.
