About
Released by Tomy in 1981 as Tomytronic Pac Man, this is a dedicated single-player tabletop electronic interpretation of Namco's maze game. It is the Tomytronic version of the machine also sold under regional names including Puck Man in Japan and Munchman in Britain.
This is a standalone Tomy electronic game, not a Nintendo Game & Watch release. Model TKY-7612 uses a vacuum-fluorescent display rather than television output or a cartridge-based console, and runs on four C batteries or a compatible 7.5-volt DC adapter.
The player uses the Pac Man controls to guide the character through the fixed maze, collecting bait, stars, cherries, and monsters while avoiding the pursuing monsters. In a notable departure from the arcade game, Pac Man cannot eat bait positioned behind him; a star temporarily lets him eat monsters, including one behind him.
The Amateur and Professional selector changes the opposition. Amateur play uses two monsters in segments one through three, then three from segment four onward, while Professional starts with three monsters; clearing the bait and stars begins a new segment.
Each bait is worth two points and a star gives 50 points as well as the temporary power-up. During that window, successive monsters score 100, 200, and 400 points; cherries provide bonus points, and reaching 2,000 points awards another Pac Man.
Finishing the bait and stars across five segments produces a GOOD indication in the score area. When every Pac Man has been eaten, the game ends and its display flickers until the power switch is turned off.
