About

Double Dragon for Sega Game Gear is a side-scrolling beat ’em up released by Virgin Games in October 1992. Although it shares its name and martial-arts roots with Technōs Japan’s arcade hit, this portable installment is a separate, single-player chapter rather than a straight conversion of the 1987 game. It was issued as Double Dragon in North America and as Double Dragon: The Revenge of Billy Lee in Europe, placing it firmly within the long-running brawler series while giving the Game Gear its own story and course of stages.

The campaign casts Billy Lee as the surviving Lee brother after the Dragon Lords kill Jimmy. Billy sets out alone to strike back at the gang that trained the brothers and to confront its leadership. That revenge setup distinguishes the Game Gear game from the original arcade scenario, which centered on Marian’s abduction and allowed both brothers to fight together. Here, the focus remains on one fighter’s pursuit through the gang’s territory, with no cooperative second player joining the action.

Play advances through six extended locations, each broken into smaller sections and ending in a boss confrontation. Billy begins in a nighttime skid-row district before moving through an uptown area, the harbor and a subway train, then continues into the countryside and a mansion. The changing backdrops make the journey feel like a sustained trek through different parts of a crime-ridden city and beyond it, rather than a repeat of the arcade game’s familiar set of stages.

As in other Double Dragon games, close-range combat supplies the foundation. Billy uses punches and kicks to clear gangs of opponents while moving through each scrolling area, and encounters are shaped by position, timing and the need to find room around attackers. Virgin’s Game Gear version adds a notably different option to the series formula: firearms can be collected at certain points. Their ammunition is limited, so they provide a temporary ranged advantage instead of replacing hand-to-hand fighting.

Pickups also support Billy’s long run through the campaign. Power-ups can extend his health meter or increase the number of continues available, which matters across the game’s large levels and successive boss battles. At the end of a level, a results screen records combat statistics including hits dealt and received, giving each completed section a small accounting of the player’s performance before the next stretch begins.

The Game Gear release arrived while Double Dragon was already a well-known name in arcade and home-console action games. Virgin Games developed and published this handheld entry with its own level order, revenge premise, solo structure and weapon choices, instead of attempting to duplicate an earlier version move for move. For players exploring the series on Sega’s color handheld, Double Dragon is therefore best understood as an unusual branch of the franchise: a portable Billy Lee adventure built around six stages of single-player street fighting.
