About
Golden Axe is Sega’s 1989 arcade fantasy action game, presented here as the US set 6 program revision for Sega System 16B hardware. Developed by Sega’s Team Shinobi and published by Sega, it turns the scrolling brawler into a swords-and-sorcery quest through Yuria. One or two players choose Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead and set out against the tyrant Death Adder, who has seized the kingdom’s Golden Axe and imprisoned its royal family. The cabinet’s central appeal is immediate: pick a warrior, advance from left to right, and clear the road of hostile soldiers and fantastical creatures.
Each hero carries a different weapon, attack reach, movement feel, and magic specialty. Ax Battler is the sword-wielding barbarian, Tyris Flare is an Amazon warrior whose spells are based on fire, and the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead fights with an axe and calls on lightning. A joystick and three action buttons cover movement, attack, jumping, and magic, while combinations expand the combat. Players can slash at close range, jump in with an attack, knock enemies back with a running charge, and use a jump-and-attack combination for a special strike. Positioning matters because crowds can surround a character, and a mistimed swing or jump may leave an opening for an enemy counterattack.
Magic is both a powerful screen-clearing option and a resource to manage. Blue thieves appear during the journey and at rest stops; kicking them loose yields magic potions. The number of pots gathered determines the strength of a warrior’s spell, and each character has a different maximum reserve and elemental display. Green thieves instead drop food that restores health. This gives the short arcade adventure a changing rhythm: players battle through a scene, chase down the small item carriers, then decide whether to spend magic immediately or save it for a tougher encounter.
Golden Axe’s Yuria is built from deliberately oversized fantasy set pieces. The heroes cross woods and villages, confront skeleton warriors and armored fighters, and travel onward by unusual means, including a settlement carried on the shell of a giant turtle and a flight toward Death Adder’s fortress. Defeated riders can leave behind Bizarrians, creatures the player can mount for extra attacks. A tail-swinging beast can knock enemies down, while dragon-like mounts add fire-based offense. These rideable creatures, the separate health and magic economies, and the distinct spell effects make the action more varied than a sequence of identical fights.
The original arcade game is a five-stage, one- or two-player experience, with camp scenes between battles and a score-based result when the run ends. Its fantasy setting was shaped by the sword-and-sorcery atmosphere of the Conan films, while its accessible side-scrolling combat placed it among Sega’s major late-1980s coin-op releases. Golden Axe later became the starting point for a larger series and received many home conversions, but this arcade version remains the source of the three-character selection, cooperative quest, Bizarrian mounts, potion-driven magic, and battle against Death Adder that define the game.
