About

Zelda no Densetsu: The Hyrule Fantasy is the original 1986 Japanese release of Nintendo's landmark action-adventure game, issued for the Family Computer Disk System on February 21, 1986. Developed and published by Nintendo, it introduced the series' foundational journey through the kingdom of Hyrule and established Link, Princess Zelda, Ganon, Impa, and the Triforce as central figures and ideas.

Ganon, the Prince of Darkness, has invaded Hyrule and taken the Triforce of Power. To keep the Triforce of Wisdom from him, Princess Zelda divides it into eight pieces and conceals them within underground labyrinths before she is captured. After Link rescues Zelda's nursemaid Impa from Ganon's followers, he takes up the quest to recover the scattered fragments, confront Ganon, and restore peace to the kingdom.

Viewed from overhead, Link explores a connected overworld of forests, mountains, coasts, caves, and hidden passages. The adventure begins with little protection, then gradually opens up as the player finds a sword and other equipment. Rupees can be discovered or earned and spent with merchants, while characters in caves offer clues, items, and upgrades. Many useful places are deliberately obscured by the landscape, making observation and experimentation part of the game.

The eight main dungeons are compact mazes of rooms, locked doors, monsters, puzzles, secret walls, and distinctive treasures. Each holds one piece of the Triforce of Wisdom, and the tools found inside broaden how Link can fight, explore, and reach new areas. Once the Triforce is complete, the route to the final challenge in Death Mountain becomes available, leading to the rescue of Zelda.

The Disk System version is especially notable as a release designed around that hardware. Its rewritable Disk Card saves progress directly rather than relying on a password system, and the platform's additional sound channel supports effects such as Link's full-health sword beam and dungeon-boss sounds. On the original Famicom hardware, the second controller's built-in microphone can also be used against Pols Voice, a large-eared enemy.

After completing the main adventure, players can begin the more difficult Ura Zelda, commonly known as the Second Quest. It changes dungeon layouts, relocates many secrets and items, and introduces tougher opposition, turning a successful first playthrough into a substantially different new challenge. This combination of free exploration, incremental discovery, and a second quest helped define the enduring character of the Zelda series.
