About
The King of Fighters ’94 for SNK’s Neo Geo is a 1994 arcade fighting game and the opening chapter of The King of Fighters series. Developed and published by SNK for its MVS arcade hardware, then released for the Neo Geo AES home system and Neo Geo CD, it turns the title of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters into an all-star tournament. Its central idea is not a succession of isolated one-on-one bouts, but teams of three fighters facing off until one side has no competitors left.
At the character-select screen, players choose one of eight fixed teams rather than assembling a custom lineup. The 24-person roster connects Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting stars such as Terry Bogard, Ryo Sakazaki and Mai Shiranui with familiar faces from Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier, plus newcomers created for the game. Kyo Kusanagi leads Japan alongside Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon, while other squads include the Women Fighters, Korea Justice, American Sports and the crossover-heavy Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier teams. Each group is associated with a country and brings its own combination of fighting styles, personalities and stage setting.
Before a match, each player fixes the order in which the three selected fighters will enter. The opening pair fight until one is knocked out; the defeated side sends in its next teammate, while the survivor regains a small portion of lost vitality before continuing. That arrangement makes managing a strong lead character part of the strategy, because a successful fighter may need to confront more than one opponent. A teammate can also be called in for a brief support attack, adding another tactical wrinkle to the elimination format. In the single-player tournament, clearing the eight teams leads to the final confrontation with organizer Rugal Bernstein.
Combat uses SNK’s four-button Neo Geo layout of light and strong punches and kicks. Joystick motions and button combinations produce each combatant’s throws, command attacks and special moves, while defensive options include a dodge. The Power Gauge rises when a fighter blocks or absorbs damage and can be charged manually at the risk of leaving that fighter exposed. A full gauge temporarily strengthens normal attacks and permits a character’s Desperation Move; these powerful techniques are also available when a fighter’s remaining life is low and the health display flashes. The result combines ideas recognizable from SNK’s earlier fighters with systems designed around the new team format.
The tournament’s story gives the crossover a shared setting. Rugal, a wealthy criminal figure seeking worthy opponents, invites fighters from around the world to his King of Fighters event. The Japan Team’s Kyo provides the new series with a young central character whose Kusanagi-family flames distinguish him from the returning cast, while the tournament gradually reveals Rugal’s sinister purpose. The game’s presentation moves from international arena backdrops to story scenes and the Black Noah, Rugal’s aircraft carrier, framing its final battle without requiring players to know the earlier SNK games.
The King of Fighters ’94 was built as a Neo Geo showcase that brought several SNK properties into a single competitive game while establishing a recurring annual fighting-game series. Its eight preset teams are an important difference from later entries, which expanded the cast and often allowed team editing. The original should also not be confused with The King of Fighters ’94 Re-Bout, the separate PlayStation 2 anniversary remake released in Japan in 2004 with revised presentation and added features. For the 1994 Neo Geo version, the fixed-team tournament, crossover roster and three-on-three Team Battle System are the defining features.
