About
Metal Slug 3 Neo Geo is SNK's 2000 run-and-gun action game, first released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system and also made available for the home AES. It follows Metal Slug 2 and Metal Slug X, and continues the series' hand-drawn 2D approach: a small squad faces huge formations of soldiers, armored machines and increasingly strange threats in a fast, side-scrolling arcade campaign. The original Neo Geo game supports one or two players, making it equally suited to a solo credit run or cooperative play at an arcade cabinet.
Players select from the returning Peregrine Falcons Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving or the S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. agents Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina "Fio" Germi. Their basic controls are direct and immediate: move, jump, fire, throw grenades, and strike enemies at close range. Every rescue, pickup and vehicle can change the rhythm of a stage. Captured prisoners of war reward the team with weapons, items or score bonuses, while a lost life before the goal means the rescued-POW count for that attempt is forfeited.
The campaign is built around five long missions rather than a simple parade of similar screens. A beach assault, a submerged route, underground ruins and other changing environments give the game a broad adventure scale, with large bosses closing each mission. General Morden's rebel army again begins as the apparent enemy, but the story expands into a confrontation with an extraterrestrial force. That escalation accounts for the game's famous mixture of military hardware, monsters, zombies and alien machinery.
Metal Slug 3 broadens the series' vehicle and transformation ideas. Alongside the familiar SV-001 Metal Slug tank, players can take control of machines and unusual rides including a drill-equipped Slug, a submarine, a helicopter and animal-mounted weapons. Food can alter a character's appearance and firing behavior, while hazards can turn a soldier into a mummy or zombie. These comic changes are temporary gameplay states, not merely visual jokes, and they sit beside the series' dense animated scenery and destructible details.
A major feature of the Neo Geo version is its branching-route design. Several missions offer forks that lead through different areas, enemy arrangements, rescue opportunities and dangers before converging on the same final battle. Choosing a route can therefore affect the equipment carried forward and the number of prisoners found, giving repeat plays a reason to explore beyond the most familiar path. The arcade structure still demands quick reactions, careful positioning and constant ammunition management, but its alternate routes make Metal Slug 3 feel larger than a single fixed run.
The original release should be distinguished from later home conversions and compilations. PlayStation 2 and Xbox editions added their own bonus material, while subsequent digital and anthology releases brought the arcade game to other platforms; those extras are not part of this Neo Geo entry. On Neo Geo, Metal Slug 3 stands as the 2000 arcade installment built around its five-mission campaign, four selectable soldiers, two-player cooperation, route choices and exuberant vehicle-driven action.
