About
WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw PS2 is a professional wrestling game developed by Yuke's and published by THQ for PlayStation 2. It arrived in North America in November 2004, with later European and Japanese releases; the Japanese edition is titled Exciting Pro Wrestling 6: SmackDown! vs. Raw. It is the sixth entry in the PlayStation-based WWE SmackDown! line and the direct follow-up to WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. The new name reflected WWE's then-current split between the SmackDown! and Raw brands, while the game remained centered on televised WWE-style matches, entrances, rivalries, and championship pursuits.
Matches use the series' fast, animation-driven wrestling system. Players select a WWE Superstar, Legend, or created wrestler, then combine strikes, grapples, running attacks, aerial moves, submissions, pins, and finishers to win under the selected rules. Timing reversals and managing momentum are important, while the PlayStation 2 controller is used to move around the ring, lock up, target an opponent, and trigger the offense appropriate to the situation. Standard one-on-one contests sit alongside larger bouts and specialty match rules, letting a single exhibition session range from a straightforward title defense to a crowded multi-wrestler match.
A key addition is the Clean/Dirty alignment system. A player can assign a wrestler a clean, dirty, or neutral approach and build the relevant meter through actions in the ring. Clean tactics reward sportsmanlike and crowd-pleasing play, whereas dirty tactics lean into the rule-breaking behavior associated with a heel. When the meter is charged, it unlocks an alignment-specific advantage. This gives wrestlers a practical character direction during a match instead of treating every bout as the same race to a finishing move. Pre-match confrontations, including stare-downs and tests of strength, and interactive exchanges during matches add further presentation-minded moments to the action.
The single-player Season mode provides an extended way to take part in WWE programming and matches, while Challenge mode presents set objectives at different difficulty levels and can reward progress with unlockable content. The game also retains and expands the series' customization tools. Create-a-Wrestler allows a custom Superstar to be shaped through appearance, moves, attributes, entrance details, and brand placement. Players can organize stables, adjust entrances, design championships in Create-a-Championship, and book their own cards in Create-a-PPV. Those creations can then be used in the wider collection of match options rather than remaining separate menu curiosities.
WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw also introduced online play to this WWE game line on PlayStation 2, although its online selection was limited compared with local modes. Offline multiplayer remains central: friends can share the system for competitive wrestling matches, while solo players can work through the season, challenges, custom events, and created title defenses. The presentation draws on WWE television of the period, with show and pay-per-view arenas, recognizable personalities, entrance music, commentary, and recorded voices from the licensed talent and on-screen figures represented in the game.
As the first release to carry the SmackDown! vs. Raw name, this 2004 PlayStation 2 game established the label used by its annual successors for years afterward. It captures a specific transition in WWE's mid-2000s brand era while carrying forward the wrestling foundation of its predecessor. For players exploring PlayStation 2 wrestling games, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw combines quick ring action with a useful layer of character alignment, season-based progression, local competition, and creation modes that make it possible to build a personal version of WWE programming.
