About

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 third-person action game from The Collective, published by LucasArts alongside the release of George Lucas’s film. Rather than using the handheld games’ side-scrolling approach, this console version stages a cinematic, chapter-by-chapter adaptation built around close-range Jedi combat. Players follow the final days of the Clone Wars through the perspectives of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, from the rescue aboard the Invisible Hand to the confrontation on Mustafar.

The campaign is organized into 17 missions and alternates between Anakin and Obi-Wan as the story moves through familiar locations and battles. Droid forces, clone troopers, Separatist guards, and major opponents stand between the two Jedi and their objectives. Movie footage is woven into the progression, while the game also expands the action with encounters and situations created to make the characters’ journeys playable. The result is a linear adventure focused on the film’s turning points rather than an open-world Star Wars game.

Lightsaber fighting is the center of the PlayStation 2 experience. Each Jedi has quick, strong, and critical attacks that can be linked into combinations, with charged strikes and physical moves such as kicks, jumps, and grapples adding more options at close range. Force abilities and defensive techniques complement the saber work, including the need to handle incoming blaster fire. A saber lock turns certain duels into direct contests in which the player must overpower an opponent instead of simply trading ordinary attacks.

Progression gives the two protagonists a reason to develop over the course of the story. Completing missions and finding or earning customization points allows attacks, Force powers, and related abilities to be improved. The environments participate in the action as well: objects can be moved or destroyed with a lightsaber or the Force, sometimes opening a route and sometimes becoming part of a fight. This separates the PS2 version from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS releases, which use a different handheld format and mechanics.

Beyond the main narrative, the PS2 edition includes local multiplayer content designed around lightsaber duels. Two players can select from a roster that includes Anakin, Obi-Wan, Count Dooku, General Grievous, Mace Windu, Cin Drallig, and Serra Keto, with further characters and costumes available through play. The combatants begin these matches on equal footing, while their move sets retain the advanced techniques needed for a fast one-on-one contest. Separate cooperative missions also let two players work together against enemy forces.

The game’s story remains closely connected to Episode III’s fall of the Republic, but the console campaign includes material beyond a straightforward retelling. Its climactic battle offers an alternate path in which Darth Vader can defeat Obi-Wan, creating a non-film outcome for the PS2 and Xbox version. Released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005, it is distinct from the same-title Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games despite sharing the film, heroes, and release window. For players looking for a PlayStation 2 Star Wars game centered on prequel-era lightsaber action, it captures the conflict between Anakin and Obi-Wan as its main dramatic and mechanical focus.
