About
SingStar Pop Hits for PlayStation 2 is a karaoke music game released in France on 13 June 2007. Developed by London Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, it is a regional entry in Sony’s SingStar series built around a set of contemporary pop recordings. Rather than creating a fictional singer or following a story, players choose a song, take a microphone and perform along with its on-screen music video. The French edition is especially notable for tailoring much of its selection to the local market.
Each performance turns a song into a pitch-and-timing challenge. Lyrics appear on screen while horizontal note bars show the melody the player is expected to follow. Singing in the right register and at the right moment earns points, giving every track a score to improve on or use in a head-to-head contest. The system evaluates the shape and timing of the vocal performance rather than requiring an exact imitation of the recording, so the emphasis is on following the musical line and keeping the song moving.
SingStar Pop Hits is designed as a social PS2 game as much as a solo score chase. One or two singers can take the microphones for competitive songs or shared parts, while the wider party formats support up to eight local players by rotating performers through rounds and teams. This makes the game suitable for short sing-offs as well as longer gatherings: select a track, hand over the microphone, and compare the results when the performance ends. The PlayStation 2 release has no online multiplayer, keeping the focus on people in the room.
The disc’s French playlist distinguishes this version from Pop Hits releases elsewhere in Europe and Australia. It includes international selections such as Akon’s “Lonely,” Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” and Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny from the Block,” but its catalogue is largely rebuilt around French-language pop and rap of the period. Artists represented include Anaïs, the Bratisla Boys, Corneille, Diam’s, Fatal Bazooka, Kaolin, K-Maro, M. Pokora, Nâdiya, Olivia Ruiz, Shy’m, Superbus, Vitaa and others. Several performers have more than one song, which gives the 30-track programme a distinctly different identity from the English-language Pop Hits disc.
Like other PlayStation 2 SingStar releases, Pop Hits uses the series’ red-and-blue USB microphone setup and presents licensed music videos behind the vocal guide. Its regional track list is the main reason to seek out this particular edition: it captures a snapshot of French mainstream pop at the time of its release while retaining the straightforward, accessible SingStar format. Players who own other compatible SingStar discs can also use the series’ disc-swapping feature to access additional song libraries without restarting the console, while Pop Hits itself remains a self-contained party karaoke collection for the PS2.
