About

Dog's Life for PlayStation 2 is a single-player action-adventure game from Frontier Developments, released by Sony Computer Entertainment in Europe in 2003. Hip Interactive handled its North American release in 2004. Directed by Frontier co-founder David Braben, this PS2-exclusive adventure puts players in the paws of Jake, an American foxhound, rather than casting them as a person. The premise begins when Daisy, the Labrador Jake cares about, is taken by dog catchers. Jake sets out across a stylised American countryside, mountain resort and city to follow the trail and uncover the scheme behind her disappearance.

The central idea is to make ordinary dog behaviour the basis of exploration. Jake moves through 3D environments from a third-person view, talking to people in his own way, searching for items and taking on local challenges. The most distinctive tool is Smellovision: switching to this first-person scent view changes the appearance of the world so important odours stand out in colour. It helps Jake pick out trails, footprints and objectives that are invisible in the ordinary view, turning his sense of smell into both a navigation aid and a puzzle-solving system.

Bones provide much of the game's progression. They can be discovered around the environment, dug up, earned from people or won through dog-related activities. As Jake collects them, he improves the attributes that make later tasks easier. Human characters can offer jobs in exchange for a reward, while the landscape contains routes, hidden smells and side activities that encourage players to look beyond the direct path to Daisy. This structure gives the adventure a mix of story-driven travel, scavenging and small self-contained objectives rather than a single uninterrupted chase.

Other dogs are important to every region. Dog's Life includes more than 15 breeds, and Jake can meet local rivals whose challenges must be overcome before they become allies. These encounters take the form of compact competitions such as races, obedience exercises, tug-of-war and territory-marking games. Once Jake has won a dog's support, the player can take control of that dog and use its particular traits to reach further bones and other secrets. The change of playable dog gives the PS2 game a practical reason to revisit areas and approach exploration from a different canine perspective.

Jake can also learn tricks, including actions used to charm people into giving him treats. Grooming locations let him be cleaned up and receive a new collar, while food and other everyday dog concerns are folded into the comedy. The tone is deliberately mischievous: the story and activities lean into barking, digging, chasing and scent-following rather than treating the dog hero as a human character in disguise. Along the route, Jake must also avoid threats such as the dog catcher and a Dobermann that pursues him, keeping the rescue mission moving between its exploratory sections and set challenges.

Dog's Life arrived during the PlayStation 2 era as an unusual character-driven adventure built around an animal's senses. Frontier had previously been associated with very different kinds of games, making its choice of a comic dog-led journey especially distinctive. Its regional publishing history is also worth noting: Sony Computer Entertainment released the game in Europe, while Hip Interactive brought it to North America the following year. For players looking for a PS2 adventure with an offbeat premise, Dog's Life combines a canine rescue story with scent-based exploration, collectible progression and a broad cast of dogs to meet and control.
