About

Sangokushi: Koumeiden for Game Boy Advance is Koei’s Japanese tactical role-playing game, released on January 27, 2005. Set amid the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China, it puts the player in the role of Zhuge Liang, the celebrated strategist also known as Kongming. Rather than asking the player to rule every province in a grand-strategy campaign, the game follows a story-driven succession of battles inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms, concentrating on Zhuge Liang’s service to Shu and its struggle to restore the Han dynasty.

The campaign begins with Zhuge Liang joining Liu Bei after the famous Three Visits and follows his military career beyond Liu Bei’s death. Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Cao Cao, Sun Quan, and many other figures from the Three Kingdoms tradition appear along the way. The narrative moves from battle to battle, with conversations and events setting up each engagement. Certain choices can send the story in different directions, giving events, battlefield conditions, and the eventual conclusion added weight beyond simply clearing the next map.

Combat is turn-based and played with individual military units on tactical maps. Infantry, cavalry, archers, and other unit lines bring different strengths to a force, so positioning and choosing an appropriate matchup matter. The Game Boy Advance version has 16 unit families divided into 40 classes. Items can change a unit’s line or promote it to a new class, allowing the army to develop as the campaign progresses rather than remain fixed from the opening chapters.

Strategy also extends to the game’s large selection of tactics. Sangokushi: Koumeiden includes 56 schemes, ranging across fire, water, wind, and earth attacks as well as recovery, offensive support, and special effects. Unit attributes influence how tactics work, making battlefield decisions more than a choice between moving and attacking. Equipment and other items obtained through strategy sections or events add another layer to planning, while specific encounters on the field can affect whether particular officers join the party.

The game’s scenario design emphasizes clear objectives: each stage is advanced by meeting its win condition, but the route through the campaign is not entirely rigid. Decisions made around events can alter advantages in the following battle and help determine which outcome is reached. This focus on Zhuge Liang distinguishes Sangokushi: Koumeiden from Koei’s related Sangokushi Eiketsuden, which centers on Liu Bei. Together, the two titles offer different character-led perspectives on the same Three Kingdoms material.

For the portable release, Koei also included a History Mode that lets players review the course of the story and a Biographical Record database for looking up the officers encountered in the game. These features suit a campaign built from historical-fiction characters and long-running alliances as much as from individual maps. Sangokushi: Koumeiden remains a Game Boy Advance tactical RPG for players interested in commanding Shu forces through a choice-sensitive Three Kingdoms campaign led by one of the era’s most enduring strategists.
