About

Extreme Ghostbusters: Code Ecto-1 is a 2002 Game Boy Advance action game based on the Extreme Ghostbusters animated series. Developed by Magic Pockets, it was published in Europe by Light & Shadow Production, while the North American release was titled simply Extreme Ghostbusters and published by DreamCatcher Interactive. This is a separate game from the earlier Game Boy Color Extreme Ghostbusters title. Its story brings the television series' younger ghost-hunting team to a new handheld adventure set amid a supernatural crisis in New York City.

Count Mercharior, a half-human, half-demon threat, has unleashed ectoplasmic forces and abducted Roland Jackson and Garrett Miller. Eduardo Rivera and Kylie Griffin are left to investigate the invasion, follow the evidence behind the kidnappings, and bring their teammates home. The premise keeps the focus on the two remaining field agents while drawing on the personalities, equipment, and New York setting associated with the animated series.

Most of the Game Boy Advance adventure takes the form of side-scrolling action-platform stages. Players choose Eduardo or Kylie and guide the selected Ghostbuster through haunted locations, jumping across obstacles, dealing with hostile apparitions, and using a proton weapon against the spirits in their path. Ghosts can be confronted with proton fire or captured with a trap, giving the familiar Ghostbusters tools a direct role in the game’s action. Progress is built around locating clues and surviving each area on the route to the missing team members and Mercharior.

Code Ecto-1 contains 12 platform levels divided among four worlds, with a major encounter closing each region. It also breaks up the on-foot missions with four overhead Ecto-1 driving sequences through New York. These timed trips put the famous ambulance at the center of the transition to the next haunted destination, rather than treating it as a background prop. The combination of platform shooting, ghost trapping, boss fights, and driving gives the GBA game a broader structure than a single-style licensed action game.

The release reflects the early-2000s expansion of the Ghostbusters franchise into games built around the Extreme Ghostbusters cast: Kylie, Eduardo, Roland, and Garrett, the newer team introduced in the 1997 animated series. For Game Boy Advance players, Extreme Ghostbusters: Code Ecto-1 offers an original series-based rescue story rather than an adaptation of a particular television episode. Its regional naming is worth noting when searching for the cartridge: Code Ecto-1 is the European title, whereas the North American edition is commonly listed as Extreme Ghostbusters.
