About

R-Type for PC Engine is the Japanese HuCard adaptation of Irem's 1987 arcade horizontal shooter, released by Hudson Soft in 1988 as R-Type I. It puts the player in the cockpit of the R-9 Arrowhead, a lone fighter sent against the biomechanical Bydo forces. This particular PC Engine release is the first half of the arcade game rather than the complete eight-stage adventure: it contains the opening four stages and was followed in Japan by R-Type II. The name and compact HuCard format make that distinction important when identifying the original PC Engine version.

Play proceeds from left to right through hostile alien territory, with the direction pad guiding the R-9 through cramped scenery, enemy formations, and projectiles. The ship begins with a rapid standard shot, but a held fire button charges the Wave Cannon for a more powerful blast. This simple choice between continuous fire and a saved charge is central to surviving the game's deliberate pace. Checkpoints and lost power after a crash make careful positioning and learning enemy patterns especially valuable.

The defining tool is the Force, an indestructible auxiliary pod collected during play. It can lock onto the front or rear of the R-9 to block many attacks while changing the ship's offensive coverage, or be released to operate independently ahead of the fighter. Weapon pickups alter the Force's laser behavior, while speed upgrades, missiles, and Bits expand the R-9's options. Moving the Force between front, rear, and detached positions turns it into both a shield and an attacking instrument, particularly around the game's large set-piece enemies.

R-Type I presents the first four arcade stages, including organic environments, dense mechanical installations, and the famous enormous battleship sequence. Each stage closes with a boss encounter, and the route demands that the player read terrain as closely as enemy fire. The PC Engine conversion preserves the core R-9, Force, and Wave Cannon systems while adapting the arcade game to the console's display and HuCard storage limits. A password issued after the fourth stage allowed players to carry their progress into the separately sold R-Type II.

The split format was unique to the Japanese PC Engine release: Hudson later issued the full game on one card in North America as R-Type for the TurboGrafx-16. That version combines the material sold as R-Type I and R-Type II in Japan, so it should not be mistaken for this four-stage HuCard. R-Type I remains an early example of how closely a major arcade shooter could be brought to the PC Engine, and its Force pod, charged Wave Cannon, imposing bosses, and demanding stage design established elements that would define the wider R-Type series.
